Blue Plaque

On December 2nd 2008 Albert was commemorated by Leeds Civic Trust with a plaque in his name. The plaque is situated outside the main entrance to the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds.

Leeds Civic Trust Chairman Peter Baker said: "Leeds and Yorkshire have many sporting heroes, so the granting of one of our blue plaques must be reserved for only those figures who stand out head and shoulders above the rest. Albert Goldthorpe does just that.

Rugby league historian Professor Tony Collins said: "Without Albert Goldthorpe's leadership and iconic status, both the club and the community would have been the poorer.

In front of invited guests and others the unveiling was performed by David Oxley CBE, the former Secretary General of the Rugby League and a Trustee of the Rugby League Heritage Foundation.

After the unveiling ceremony Bryan Smith spoke about the Goldthorpes of Stourton and David Oxley spoke of Albert and of the history of the game.

The plaque was sponsored by Albert's family who would like to thank everyone involved for making this happen and for ensuring that there is a lasting tribute to Albert in his home city.
