Hunslet's First Rugby League Match 1895

Warrington v Hunslet

On September 7th 1895 a Hunslet team, weakened by cricket commitments and concerns of some players over being professionalised, travelled to Wilderspool on a beautiful late summer day.

Warrington v Hunslet

Warrington survived an early Hunslet attack. The Parksiders continued to dominate with the help of a couple of penalties. The home side then took the territorial advantage following a great dribble and only good work by Walter Goldthorpe prevented a score. Half time came with no score.

Wire started the second period the stronger but Mitchell and Lapping created good field position and Walter Goldthorpe, kicking in the absence of his brother, dropped a goal after taking possession near the touch line and beating several defenders. The home side replied immediately and Foden scored a try near the corner which Burton converted.

Final Score - Warrington 5 Hunslet 4
